To assist families in becoming successful stewards of their money, and living well
as they do it.
Here is a little bit about me, and my journey to become a "Savvy Steward". My name is Annie Shaw. I am wife to a wonderful husband, Brian and a mommy to Abbie (7) and Isaac (4). In addition to operating The Savvy Steward business and my general coupon duties at home, I also volunteer at my local church, sew occasionally, LOVE my daily devotions and worship time, take way too many photographs, and home school my sweet little ones. Life is wonderfully busy.
Most people ask me how I came to be a "couponer". The answer is extremely easy, and kind of un-interesting. To be honest, there is not one time in my life that I can not remember coupons/money savings being a part of it. When I was a child, my mom would allow my sisters and I to dig through the big coupon bins at Cub foods, and search for our favorite coupons...plus the ones that she needed. I was also given the best job in the world, at least in the eyes of my 10 year old head. I was given the job of cutting out the coupons from the Sunday papers each week. I looked forward to it each week, and dreamed about what coupons might be in the paper. (Yes, I was rather nerdy.)
As a teenager, the passion and lessons just got deeper. In my home school Consumer Math class, I was required to work a budget. My mom allowed my sister and I to plan a grocery shopping trip. We were given a certain amount of money to spend, and what we saved in sales and coupons, we could keep. Let's just say, I kept a lot. Also, as I entered the world of dating, I realized that my boyfriends and I, could go to really nice restaurants, if we had a buy one get one free coupon! For Christmas, I would ask for an Entertainment coupon book, and then my dates and I would eat REALLY well, for 1/2 the amount. We would also go to the theatre for 1/2 price and many museums! I had an awesome high school life, partly because of coupons.
When I married, I still used coupons, but really stuck around my local stores. My husband had taken the Pastorate of a small church, in an area that was completely new to me. I thought my only options were to go to the little local grocery mart. After living off of hotdogs and macaroni for 6 months, I realized that I must venture out! And venture we did. My husband and I started driving over an hour to the nearest Meijer and Kroger! We would stock up on Triple Coupon days, and anytime that there was a great sale. Buying only our perishables at the more expensive local store. This philosophy alone, saved our family about 50% a month!
Shortly after my daughter was born, I became aware of what resources the internet had to offer. It did not take me long to realize that I could piece together all the deals that I found online and trade and order coupons from "clippers"! Before too long, I was saving 75% off EVERY trip. That was over 7 years ago.
After becoming confident in the coupon world, I started telling everyone else about it. I am pretty sure that most people would just give me the obligatory, "Wow Annie, that's great" line, when I would share my good deals. I think that many did not believe that it really could be done. But, just like everything else in life, the proof is in the pudding. After watching how God provided for my family through coupons, many started learning...and joining me in the march to be a good steward! I love having "thrifty" friends and family. And it is so much fun getting together to chat about great deals!
Recently, I have noticed God pressing my heart a little more. I would not choose public speaking on my own, but I have realized that I can share some simple, yet important, knowledge with others...and change their families forever. There is a saying that goes, "Give a woman a coupon...feed her for a day. Teach her how to coupon...feed her family forever." I long to help others feed their families well. I love to hear a new couponer tell me how the information of "Savvy Stewardship", has helped her get $100 worth of groceries for $15. These thrills, are what have encouraged me to venture out and share with others. After the encouragement of my friends and family...and the never ending talk from my sweet hubby, "The Savvy Steward" business was formed.
